What is the difference between a tab and a first-line indent?

There are a few differences between a tab and a first-line indent in Word.

First-line indent:

A first-line indent in Word automatically indents the first line of each paragraph by a set amount. This will allow you to see where each paragraph starts. This is mainly used in documents such as essays and reports.

Tab:

When you press the Tab key, the cursor is moved to a fixed distance which is usually 0.5 inches to the right. Unlike a first-line indent, a tab can be used anywhere on a document. Tab is good for lining up your words, and tables.
